This project was initiated by the Region of Niagara to address anticipated traffic demands and operational/
safety concerns due to the number of commercial driveways in the road section, located in the
City of Welland between Thorold Road and Quaker Road. The existing road section is 4.55 km long
and is basically a four (4) lane urban section.
The project was carried out under Schedule C of the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment
Process, and involved two public meetings.
Phase 1 of the project involved the reconstruction of Niagara Street, from Thorold Road to Woodlawn
to a five (5) lane section (two lanes in each direction with a center left-turn lane), including a new signalized
intersection at Aqueduct Street. Total length of this new urban section is 2 km.
